I am a one-to-one carer for a young gentleman with Juvenile variant Battens disease in Wales, UK, and used to look after several young people with the disease. Whilst we can never know how it feels for a family to lose their beautiful sons and daughters to this awful disease, every variant, it is something that I have spent - and will continue to do so - my life doing all I can to help support the fight. Jacob is an impossibly beautiful young man, and I'm sure has the most incredible spirit, as does the gentleman I care for. It's an incredibly cruel disease, but I hope that I'm not the only one who finds that day-to-day, the experience of being part of the life of someone with Battens is a humbling and surprisingly upbeat one; the ability of the gent I look after to enjoy every day life and bring so much joy to everyone he meets is a trait I have seen in every wonderful young person I have ever encountered in this area.
